All questions

Who am I calling when I dial (816) 422-DOOR?

A referral line. An automated prompt asks for your ZIP code and what you need, then we try to connect you with an independent garage door company that serves your area. We may be paid for the referral. We don't do repairs ourselves.

Do I have to hire anyone if I call?

No. Calling doesn't commit you to anything. Ask questions, check the company out, and decide for yourself.

What if no company is available when I call?

Availability depends on which local companies are taking calls at the time. If no one is available, the system will let you know, and you can try again later.

What areas does the line cover?

Independence (64050 to 64058), Blue Springs, Lee's Summit, Grain Valley, Buckner, Sibley, Oak Grove, Grandview, Raymore, Belton, Greenwood, Lone Jack and Pleasant Hill. See the service areas page.

How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?

A loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the coiled spring above the door, an opener that strains and stops, or a door that suddenly feels very heavy. See broken springs.

Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?

It's risky. The door can be very heavy and can fall. If you must get a car out, use two adults, lift slowly and keep hands clear of the panel joints. Don't pull the red release cord while the door is open.

Why does my garage door reverse before it closes?

Usually the safety sensors are dirty, misaligned or blocked. Wipe the lenses and line them up until both lights are steady. See won't open or close.

My opener lost its remotes after a storm. How do I fix it?

Check the remote battery and the lock button on the wall control, then re-pair the remotes using the learn button on the opener. Your model's manual has the steps.

Is hail damage to a garage door covered by insurance?

Often a garage door attached to the house is covered like the rest of the house, subject to your deductible, but policies vary. Photograph the damage and call your insurer. See hail and storm damage.

How do I free a garage door that's frozen to the floor?

Turn off the opener, break the ice gently along the seal with a plastic scraper, warm it with a hair dryer, then try again. Don't pry the door up. See winter and ice.

How long do garage door springs last?

Standard springs are often rated for around 10,000 cycles, which is several years for most households. Heavy daily use wears them out sooner.

Should I repair my door or replace it?

Most problems are repairs. Several damaged sections, rot, rust-through, repeated track problems or unavailable parts point toward replacement. See repair or replace.

Do the companies work on commercial doors?

Some do. Say it's a commercial or shop door when you call. See commercial doors.

Does Missouri require garage door companies to be licensed?

There's no statewide general contractor license in Missouri. Cities set their own rules, and Independence requires a city contractor license for permitted work. See hiring a garage door company.

How should I maintain my garage door?

A couple of times a year: lubricate hinges, roller bearings and springs, check the balance, look over the cables and bottom seal, and test the auto-reverse with a block of wood.
